Your vehicle paint takes the most damage on any given day. While you’re sure to keep the interior and inner workings of your vehicle in tip-top shape, sometimes the protection of the exterior vehicle paint can fall to the wayside. By following the few simple steps below, you can insure that your auto paint looks great and lasts longer.
Washing your car regularly will keep the vehicle’s paint from accumulating dirt, grime and gritty elements that can scratch and ruin your paint. Wash your car at least once a week with a soap intended for car washing. Dish soap, liquid hand soap and household cleaners are not recommended because they can damage the finish and strip away any protective wax that your paint may have. Using a cotton or paint-safe microfiber washing mitt will minimize scratching and will be easier on your paint than a sponge or towel. Dry your car with a 100% cotton or sheepskin chamois. Polyester and microfiber can scratch your paint surface.
Cleaning Tips and Tricks
There are many tips and tricks to cleaning your car. Regular car washes will protect and prolong the life of your vehicle’s paint.
Detail clay can be used to decontaminate your paint without abrasion or scratching. It comes in a kit with lubricating spray that protects your paint.
If your car appears dull after washing, you can car polish, cleaner or a rubbing compound. Each will remove any dull paint but in varying degrees. Polish will remove the least, a cleaner will remove slightly more and a rubbing compound will remove the most.
Wax and Sealant
Wax or sealant is a great way to finish protecting your vehicle’s paint. There are many different waxes and sealants that can last anywhere from weeks to months. Waxes generally last from eight to twelve weeks, while some sealants can last up to six months. You can also use a high quality paint sealant first and then finish with a wax over that.
A Few More Tips & Tricks
- Spray your car with water before washing. This will clear a lot of the dirt and containments off of the paint before you go over it with your washing mitt.
- Apply wax to cool paint. Make sure that your paint is cool to the touch before you apply any wax or sealant.
- Follow all directions on car wash and detail products.
By following these simple tips, you can protect and prolong the life of your paint for years to come.
